Our Curriculum Approach at Claystone School

At Claystone School, we are committed to providing a flexible, ambitious and personalised curriculum that enables every learner to engage in meaningful learning and exploration. We recognise that all children develop differently, so our approach is intentionally responsive, allowing pupils to learn in the ways that best suit their developmental stage and preferred style of engagement. Through our three learner styles—Sapling (Exposure), Tree (Exploration) and Forest (Enquire)—we ensure that every learner experiences teaching that is motivating, accessible and tailored to their strengths and needs. Our goal is to nurture communication, curiosity, independence and positive relationships so that all learners can make purposeful progress and feel confident, valued and ready to learn.

Our curriculum is grounded in the belief that children learn best through rich, engaging experiences that are meaningful and connected to the world around them. Each term, coherent themes link learning across subjects, offering opportunities for pupils to explore, discover and enquire in ways that reflect how they learn best. These themes are highly adaptable, enabling learners to build understanding through sensory engagement, practical activities, expressive communication, problem‑solving and real‑world application. Whether a pupil is developing early interaction skills, exploring new ideas or applying knowledge with growing independence, we ensure that their learning journey supports both their strengths and the areas of need identified within their EHCPs.

Central to our practice is our Total Communication Approach, which ensures that every learner can understand and express themselves in the ways that are most effective for them. This includes the use of speech, signing, symbols, visuals, gesture and objects of reference, all embedded seamlessly throughout the day. Alongside this sits our commitment to Ask–Accept–Develop, an interactional approach that supports pupils to lead their learning, communicate purposefully and engage with increasing confidence. Our classrooms are also shaped by Trauma Informed principles, creating predictable, nurturing and emotionally safe environments where pupils feel secure and ready to engage. This includes prioritising relationships, co‑regulation and low‑demand approaches that reduce anxiety and build trust.

Therapeutic input is another essential element of our curriculum. We work closely with our on‑site clinical team to ensure that therapeutic goals are embedded into daily routines, activities and interactions. This integrated approach strengthens pupils’ communication, sensory regulation, physical development and functional skills, helping them generalise learning across settings and contexts. Enrichment through visits, visitors and celebrations further broadens pupils’ real‑world understanding, deepens motivation and supports them to connect their learning with life beyond the classroom.

The impact of our curriculum is seen in the meaningful progress pupils make from their individual starting points. By learning through their preferred style—Sapling, Tree or Forest—pupils build secure knowledge, functional life skills, resilience and independence. They develop the communication, social understanding and self‑management skills they need for the next stages of education, adulthood and community life. Through a curriculum that embraces difference and celebrates every learner’s potential, we prepare our pupils for safe, healthy and fulfilling futures.
